Made from a photo of the Bethesda Terrace, Angel of the Waters fountain, this piece encapsulates some of the angelic & faerie energies only found within this very special place.
The main angel you see here, is one of the most famous in the world. Sculpted by Emma Stebbins and unveiled in 1873, this angel is arguably one of the most important pieces of American Art/Architecture, as Stebbins was the first female to receive a public commission for major artwork in New York City.
Since Bethesda Terrace was designed to honor all four seasons, Stebbins designed the angel to also work with the elements of water and air. This is why we see our angel, wings outstretched, able to withstand any wind, and touching down upon the fountain of the waters. Beneath her, sit 4 cherubs (or putti angels as they would more accurately be known), representing Temperance, Purity, Health, and Peace. Calling her the ‘Angel of the Waters’, also makes reference to the story within the Gospel of John, whereby Christ heals a paralyzed man, within the angelically blessed waters of The Pool of Bethesda, giving it additional healing powers and properties (this pool is still currently active, in the Muslim Quarter of Jerusalem, next to the Lions Gate & Church of Saint Anne, Christ’s maternal grandmother). As Central Park was also the location for NYC’s first dependable supply of pure water (through the Croton Aqueduct), our angel carries these traditions of healing and purity forward, by holding a lily in one hand, and a continual blessing stance with the other.
In these regards, this piece, is designed to work with these original energies, and open you up to more.
